Reflections on the
Heart of Shamanism
While walking through the hills this afternoon I heard my words
return.... Commitment and service to all our relations and to Spirit,
this is the heart of shamanism. And I realized that the word
'service' is much too abstract... I wish to be more specific.
Service means obeying the dictates of inner voice over personal desires. It means a deep commitment to helping alleviate suffering in whatever forms we may encounter it. It means doing simple, ordinary acts of kindness... like bringing food to our neighbor when he or she is ill or taking the time to listen to someone when they need to open their hearts. Service is thinking of the good of the collective whole as one with our own welfare. Service is going into the kitchen and making tortillas or washing dishes before ceremony. It is doing whatever needs to be done to make the whole work... It is surrender ! to the dictates of Spirit as She speaks within your own heart.... going the extra mile(s) when you are weary beyond all imagining... gathering up the wood in your arms and lighting the kindling on cold frosty mornings when your bones ache.... threading the loom.... soothing a tired child... walking down the road step by step day by day simply doing what needs to be done, listening, paying attention, praying, obeying Spirit, helping out weather it is by washing out the slop pail or making a pilgrimage.... getting the job done with balance, kindness and some generosity of heart.
I honestly believe that these things are more important than learning all kinds of mind altering techniques.... WE must learn to walk in balance and harmony with our feet upon the earth, close down to the earth, before we take off into flights of altered consciousness. We will see what Spirit wishes us to see as we walk o! ur path with respect for ! self, others, and The Great Spirit who l ives and breathes through all sentient beings. Of what use is it to ourselves or others to learn a technique which will get us 'high' if we have not learned how to extend our hand to one who is suffering (including to ourselves).... if we have not learned the basic ABC's of achieving balance, the middle way within ourselves? Service is caring for self and for others with respect and kindness.... it is made manifest through the smallest most mundane details of our daily lives.
Of course what I say is just a small piece of my truth brought forth, filtered through my tiny perception... I cannot speak for anyone else... these words spring forth from my limited experience on earth.... they are just my little words.. a tiny piece... so tiny... disappearing (they may) like my footprints with my passing. Still, perhaps there may be some merit in bringing forth these words.... though I am quite certain many have spoken them before me...still perhaps they may be helpful to someone who is seeking a way home.

Dear Friends,
When a catastrophic event like this happens, powerful feelings may arise.
So I offer this: Don't give any more power to a small group of people --
almost certainly zealots of some kind whose twisted psyches (along with
self-sacrificial devotion to their dark illusions).
If this had been a tornado or earthquake, it would have represented a
tragic blip in nature's enigmatic scheme. But this was personal; human
beings did this deliberately to other human beings. And some of us are
reacting exactly as they wished -- to bring the entire country to a halt,
and to create waves of paralysis much farther-reaching than the localized
damage caused, generating reactive shockwaves all over our country (and the
world).
This catastrophic series of events remind us that while we cannot control
circumstances in the world or in our personal lives, we can choose how we
will respond. None of us can (or should) stop or control our natural
emotional reactions, but we can help thwart their nefarious intent by
controlling our behavior -- by responding in our circle of friends with
compassion and calm. These people can only succeed in bringing our lives to
a halt with our cooperation. Let's not give them power over our psyches;
let's not serve their goals.
Let's remember to breathe deeply, to relax our bodies, and to focus on the
present moment, doing what needs to be done.
Historically, this attack may rank with Pearl Harbor -- and when our
country is roused, it becomes a giant, and some kind of justice will
prevail. What form that "justice" may take is difficult to predict. One
thing is certain; out of every adversity or challenge comes new lessons and
growth.
In the coming days and weeks, this event will become a topic of intense
conversation (and action in appropriate quarters); the dead will be buried
and grieved; the injured cared for; the FBI, CIA and other military
activated. You and I will go on with our lives.
Let's pray for those who need it; let's accept our emotions without letting
them disable our clarity; let's keep our hearts open, even to the waves of
pain; and let's resolve to do what we can, in our own humble ways, to help
create a world of understanding, compassion, courage, and love -- beginning
with ourselves.

"The world has been experiencing absolute disaster. We've been so protected that we don't realize it. And now the fear of something blowing up.
"You see what I mean? Indras, Indras, Indras. Brahma's eyes opening and closing and, OK, I heard one man say, there's no necessity that the human race should survive.
"Chief Seattle in another of his words said, 'Why should I lament the disappearance of my people? All things die. The white race will find this out too.' So yield to what is coming. We're in a free fall into future. We don't know where we're going. Things are changing so fast and always when you're going through a long tunnel anxiety comes along.
"And all you have to do to transform your hell into a paradise is to turn your fall into a voluntary act. I mean it's a very interesting shift of perspective, and that's all it is. Joyful participation in the sorrows and everything changes.
"And this is the quest for the inner life that will enable you to float down the stream like a human being instead of just some babbit or robot in the hands of political institutions, and that's what I'm interested in bringing forward here. And I may not be changing the world, but I'm changing people, and that's what necessary, that's what's got to be done."

Most important is to live and be filled with Love. Maintain your
sense of compassion and examine the truth. If it quickly becomes clear
to you that this act was far beyond the capacities of a specific group
and you discern a high level of conspiracy, look to your inner feelings
and your truth. The media is simply a widely influential smokescreen,
whose sole task is to overwhelm you with 'facts'. It has done its job
well. The most crucial part of your evaluation is to see beyond it. Seek
peace and, above all, seek Love. Sudden events in your world can often
overwhelm you, simply by their intensity and scope. Remember that your
world is in transition. During this time of change, events will surround
you that seem like a movie. The key, dear Hearts, is to remain focused
upon the main stage. Do not be distracted, but know that these events
will affect you inevitably and deeply. That, after all, is their
purpose.
A centered Being recognizes Truth and is able to manifest a
peaceful, sane reality. Those in power have maintained control by
keeping you off-center and totally distracted. That way, you lose
sovereignty and they gain it.

Dear friends around the world:
The events of this day cause every thinking person to stop their daily
lives, whatever is going on in them, and to ponder deeply the larger
questions of life. We search again for not only the meaning of life, but
the purpose of our individual and collective experience as we have
created it-and we look earnestly for ways in which we might recreate
ourselves anew as a human species, so that we will never treat each
other this way again.
The hour has come for us to demonstrate at the highest level our most
extraordinary thought about Who We Really Are.
There are two possible responses to what has occurred today. The first
comes from love, the second from fear.
If we come from fear we may panic and do things-as individuals and as
nations-that could only cause further damage. If we come from love we
will find refuge and strength, even as we provide it to others.
This is the moment of your ministry. This is the time of teaching. What
you teach at this time, through your every word and action right now,
will remain as indelible lessons in the hearts and minds of those whose
lives you touch, both now, and for years to come.
We will set the course for tomorrow, today. At this hour. In this
moment.

We're told on the news that about 40,000 people work in
the World Trade Center. That's also the number of
children who die every day of starvation. None of
this makes the attacks right, but it does put
things into a larger perspective. We are mostly
unmindful of the suffering in the world - even
our own. Being unmindful of it, most of us can't
even imagine the possibility of healing. But
healing is possible, through love. D. Chen
we must be awake to those who aim to protect us at the
cost of our freedom.
For several years, as many of you know, my greatest
concern for this country has been the growth of
fascist policies in the name of safety.
Remain awake.
Take a deep breath of crisp autumn air.
Cry for the pain of the world.
And become resolute in the name of freedom.
I take comfort in this prayer, written by King George V to the English people as a Christmas message of hope.
"I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year.
Give me a light so that I might go safely out into the darkness.
And he replied, Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be more to you than a light and safer that a known way."
We are all now in times of darkness and have to navigate through the unknown. Despite all the difficulties and the challenges we now face,
there is a grace in life that can be trusted. May we all be comforted and open to receiving that grace fully during this heart wrenching time.

As the time zones sweep the earth in rotation, so shall our prayers encircle the globe. We now call upon all God, Holy Spirit, Jesus, Mary, all of the ascended masters, all of the archangels, and every angel to intervene into this situation .... May this situation transmute into a blessing, that results in peace. May your fears be replaced with faith, and may your worries be transmuted into peace. God is Love, and Love is all there is. You are Love, you are eternal, and in truth, all is at peace now and forever. Let us cling to the knowledge of that truth today. If we succumb into fear, the illusion of war will grow. If we cling to the knowledge of God's eternal peace, we will reveal that truth as our reality.

I asked the Mullah a wide array of questions. "Did he hate the US? Why is
there such Anti-Americanism in this part of the world? Should Americans be afraid?"
He answered them all eloquently and without hostility. He talked about the
history of the US and Afghanistan, how during the Cold War, they were
allies, united fighting a war against the Soviets.
"You gave us weapons and trained our men. You built our roads, fed our
people. Do you realize young man that your government helps to create and
to fund the Taliban because it was their interest to use Guerilla warfare
and terrorist tactics against the Russians? You made us your friend."
"But then your Cold War ended and you deserted us." At this point, there
was a hint of animosity in his voice. " Because it was no longer in your
selfish interest to have us as your allies, you abandoned us, left our
people, hungry, and hateful. You turned your friends into foes because you
used us like whores."
Rather than reiterate some of this historical information, I will offer you what
Michael Moore reports. I think that an important part of healing the wounds of the world
is for Americans to look at our part in this and begin to take more responsibility for the
creation of a truly peaceful, harmonious world for all. Brooke

...Safe. Secure. I'm an American, living in America. I like my illusions. I
walk through a metal detector, I put my carry-ons through an x-ray machine,
and I know all will be well.

Well, the pundits are in full diarrhea mode, gushing on about the
"terrorist threat" and today's scariest dude on planet earth -- Osama bin
Laden. Hey, who knows, maybe he did it. But, something just doesn't add up.
Am I being asked to believe that this guy who sleeps in a tent in a desert
has been training pilots to fly our most modern, sophisticated jumbo jets
with such pinpoint accuracy that they are able to hit these three targets
without anyone wondering why these planes were so far off path?
Or am I being asked to believe that there were four religious/political
fanatics who JUST HAPPENED to be skilled airline pilots who JUST HAPPENED
to want to kill themselves today?
Maybe you can find one jumbo jet pilot willing to die for the cause -- but
FOUR? Ok, maybe you can -- I don't know.
What I do know is that all day long I have heard everything about this bin
Laden guy except this one fact -- WE created the monster known as Osama bin
Laden!
Where did he go to terrorist school? At the CIA!
Don't take my word for it -- I saw a piece on MSNBC last year that laid it
all out. When the Soviet Union occupied Afghanistan, the CIA trained him
and his buddies in how to commits acts of terrorism against the Soviet
forces. It worked! The Soviets turned and ran. Bin Laden was grateful for
what we taught him and thought it might be fun to use those same techniques
against us.
We abhor terrorism -- unless we're the ones doing the terrorizing.
We paid and trained and armed a group of terrorists in Nicaragua in the
1980s who killed over 30,000 civilians. That was OUR work. You and me.
Thirty thousand murdered civilians and who the hell even remembers!
We fund a lot of oppressive regimes that have killed a lot of innocent
people, and we never let the human suffering that causes to interrupt our
day one single bit.
We have orphaned so many children, tens of thousands around the world, with
our taxpayer-funded terrorism (in Chile, in Vietnam, in Gaza, in Salvador)
that I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised when those orphans grow up and
are a little whacked in the head from the horror we have helped cause.
Yet, our recent domestic terrorism bombings have not been conducted by a
guy from the desert but rather by our own citizens: a couple of ex-military
guys who hated the federal government.
From the first minutes of today's events, I never heard that possibility
suggested. Why is that?
Maybe it's because the A-rabs are much better foils. A key ingredient in
getting Americans whipped into a frenzy against a new enemy is the
all-important race card. It's much easier to get us to hate when the object
of our hatred doesn't look like us.
Congressmen and Senators spent the day calling for more money for the
military; one Senator on CNN even said he didn't want to hear any more talk
about more money for education or health care -- we should have only one
priority: our self-defense.
Will we ever get to the point that we realize we will be more secure when
the rest of the world isn't living in poverty so we can have nice running
shoes?
In just 8 months, Bush gets the whole world back to hating us again. He
withdraws from the Kyoto agreement, walks us out of the Durban conference
on racism, insists on restarting the arms race -- you name it, and Baby
Bush has blown it all.
The Senators and Congressmen tonight broke out in a spontaneous version of
"God Bless America." They're not a bad group of singers!
Yes, God, please do bless us.
Many families have been devastated tonight. This just is not right. They
did not deserve to die. If someone did this to get back at Bush, then they
did so by killing thousands of people who DID NOT VOTE for him! Boston, New
York, DC, and the planes destination of California -- these were places
that voted AGAINST Bush!
Why kill them? Why kill anyone? Such insanity.
Let's mourn, let's grieve, and when it's appropriate let's examine our
contribution to the unsafe world we live in.
It doesn't have to be like this.

Perhaps the Time is at hand for the Great Awakening to occur. It doesn't feel as if we're asleep, but the great sages and mystics of many traditions have assured us that we are, that we are dreaming this nightmare illusion we call reality. When a nightmare gets too intense, my usual response is to wake up, with great relief.
Y2K ("the millennium bug" in our computers which could lead to breakdowns throughout our society) just might be the alarm clock, the wake-up call to humanity that rouses us from our state of unconsciousness about the devastating effects of our unsustainable culture.
Our high degree of dependency on computers for everything from food to fuel, electricity, transportation, and medical care (to name a few) is not the only precarious aspect of our culture. Wendell Berry once said that the most preposterous idea for a society would be one based on a completely nonrenewable and highly polluting resource, which depends on that resource for heat, energy transportation, food, even clothing. Our society is based in this way on petroleum/natural gas; completely unsustainable. Too many wars are already fought for oil, and environmental standards are being undermined in the name of oil scarcity. "Oh, when we run out of oil, then we'll develop those renewable resources." Why not now?
Everywhere around me people are speeding up and getting busier and busier. There's no time to deal with these huge issues of environmental destruction, because we're so busy just trying to live our lives, make ends meet, take care of our children. It seems impossible, even foolish, to slow own and take time to just meditate or be quietly in nature. But Ghandi once said, "I have so much to do today, I need to meditate twice as long."
Who, in the history of humankind's life on Earth, had a sustainable lifestyle? Only the indigenous peoples. Some say that any type of agriculture at all is a non-sustainable system. But with today's population density there is no going back to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Instead, let's ask ourselves what we can learn from indigenous peoples that has application to our current times. Some principles to consider
I believe that we are called upon, at this juncture in the late 20th century, to develop and start living a more sustainable lifestyle, one that is closer to the natural cycles, less dependent upon technology. Let's choose what is natural over things that are human-made and potentially hazardous to the environment: natural fibers over synthetic ones, paper over plastic, daylight over electric light, walking or bicycling over driving, solar energy over fossil fuels, herbs over pharmaceuticals, singing and storytelling instead of TV.
To live authentically and fully is to be awake. What comes after the awareness of Y2K?
How about Y2L? That's my shorthand for "Year to Live," after the title of Stephen Levine's book A Year to Live. I am challenging myself to live as if I knew this was my last year on Earth. What, at the end of life, would I regret not having experienced, accomplished, become, lived? Some are saying Y2K could signal "the end of the world as we know it." If this were so, what would we want to accomplish in this precious and precarious year, before all the rules change?
This is a time when we may finally realize that our best "rational" thinking has gotten us into this mess. What can get us out? Reverence, humility, prayer, listening for guidance and then acting upon it may be our greatest chance. That is why, in this time of great busy-ness, urgency, and stress it is so important to slow down, be mindful, and listen deeply. What is our highest calling, what will serve the whole Earth family? What prevents us from acting upon it?

Please do not be afraid or saddened by the words of religious hate mongers.
"Witch" hunts and Inquisitions, the spread of fear and hate is not the answer for my People. And I might quickly add that no few people -- with a violent chip on their shoulder -- represent the Sioux Nation.
People who ask for war are not people of peace. And a "Declaration of War Against Exploiters of Lakota Spirituality" would have to be first leveled against the Sioux themselves -- because it is the Sioux Peace Makers, who have encouraged people to Respect Mother Earth.
It is the Sioux Peace Makers, who have encouraged people to Respect Sacred Mother Earth. It is, again, the Sioux who go out among the "white man" to speak of their traditions. Sioux Chiefs have taught people to pray in the "sweat lodge" and now that people pray in the "sweat lodge" they are condemned for it--very strange.
And why is there a Them among Us? "Divide and Conquer" methods are not all that fashionable in America. Fools Crow never preached that there was an Us and Them. He tried to bring Americans together with America.
While some serious questions have been posed -- the religious undertones of getting even remains in the shadowy realm of psychology -- not tradition. Some fingers have been pointed at some very "responsible authorities" and Social innovators who work everyday with Native children on every Reservation.
There are a lot of racist accusations that were spoken among those people who preach hate and violence. "White man's World" -- where is that? -- this is certainly not any America we all know. There are people of every Race and Color in America. Aren't we Black also, Asian too and aren't there a substantial number of mixed blood children on every Reservation?
No--I would advocate that there be Peace Chiefs involved here. The people who wrote that hate literature live in the past and use hate slogans and phrases from a bygone time. Modern Americans did not conquer the Indians -- all of we modern Americans are the Indians.
Americans and our World's people need to hear from our reservations. They need to learn of how Humane and kind our Native People are. We are Giving, we worship the Give Away. When this happens, other Americans will listen to our People's social and political Needs.
An Us and Them does not work in the N.B.A. and the W.N.B.A. (basketball teams). The Chicago Bulls were not an Us and Them. They played as a team and won. When all we American Indian People play as a Team we will win. And we cannot win when we separate ourselves from the remainder of America's People.
The Buddhists, Janists, Moslems, Christians, Hebrews, and the other many orthodox faiths do not rail at people because they are "using their traditional ways". In fact, they encourage it.
Of course there are people who misuse things and are ignorant. Teach the ignorant and praise those who wish to cherish life and Respect our Sacred Mother Earth -- and especially White Buffalo Woman, our Medicine Pipe. A lot of love and a whole bunch of Care are needed right now. Because this racist attitude about the separation of Us an Them has violently divided our youth on our Reservations -- and made them to feel alienated in their own time and their own America.
Let's take a look at many of the similarities -- and not the differences:
Not too long ago, Europeans too were tribal peoples -- from the British Isles all the way across the Continent -- East to the former lands of the Huns and Magyars. The Kelts (also known as the Celts) and the Germanic Tribes and others lived in great forests called the Vilde or wild.
Other Celts, or Kelts lived, fished and farmed along the rugged seacoasts of Europe and were very much Earth loving People. Their way of living was much like that of our Indian Families in America.
Our Earth Mother was worshipped and women had an equal voice in the Tribe and government. As an example: Thor and his wife Thora were the thunder and the rain. Odin and his wife Uddern led the Hunt. The people of Crete, Egypt, the Pagani of Italy, the Gauls and the Brightines of Avolans' England -- all loved Sacred Mother Earth.
Freiya (pronounced Fr-eye-ya) and her Brother Freya (pronounced Fra- yah) were respected and worshipped as Light and all growing things. We get the word Free and Freedom from the word Freiya. The people of Freiya were called Freiya's People -- or Free People.
Yes, the women were equal to the men, but this was lost when the propagandists arrived and brought their Feudalistic world of one god -- one ruling family and slavery.
The Sacred Tree of Life called The tree of The Great Middle World -- the Egg of Knowing -- was sometimes called Yggdrasil. This Tree of knowledge was the Great Wheel of the North where people could learn.
This same Great Medicine Wheel of learning was later known to be in the place of the Closed Way of the Holy Stone -- Schleswigholstein. This Magical place held the Nine Worlds in its embrace, and was the web of the Wyrd (or Sacred Word) that connected all things together.
Our ancestors still live in us and continue to speak to us in our Dreams -- telling all of us to be Respectful of our chance to have Life and to be with our Sacred Earth. Yes, they live in our very genes.
The way of the indigenous Europeans was very similar to our Native Families here in the Americas. They had the Vision Quest. And they prayed in Lodges of Fire and Stone. Our Norse Family called these the Utiseta -- or the "sitting out." Anthropologist gave these Utsieta's the unflattering name of "sweat lodge".
This Sauna or (of the Sun) was held to be very Sacred -- especially to the Goddess of the Trees, Willows and Birches.
Great Healers, The Pagani, meaning farmers, Teachers, Ships -- voyagers, warriors -- and especially all mothers -- would enter the lodge in Honoring of our Mother Earth, the Brooks, rocks, and trees -- giving Thanks to the Spirit of Life for all Healing and our very nourishment. This Bathing Lodge or Healing Lodge was also Sacred to the Goddess Hygiene.
In the far North, Uddern, the Mother of Lightning and Thunder and Odin her Husband were the Guides and Teachers for all Medicine People -- now conquering all the peoples of the North -- and everything drastically changed. Millions of our old teachers were destroyed, burned at the stake -- and were called "witches". These gentle teachers were both female and male.
They died because they clung on to the Garden Dances, Community Dances, Sun Dances, Moon Dances and their ability to Doctor the sick. They knew of Surgery.
But time passes, and now something new is happening, World-Wide. The way of old Europe, so long crushed and repressed, is once again accessible to its far-flung sons and daughters!
We must teach all people to respect the brave Medicine women and men, (Both Native and Keltic) who have persisted in telling People about Sacred Life and to Respect our holy Planet Mother, Earth. These teachers have reminded the world's People of this important duty toward Life.
But don't we all owe it to our Ancestors to once again choose to support Life and Honor our Creatress Mother, WahKahn? When women are held to be equal to men -- then our Creatress Mother and Father will once again live in Balance with Humans.

There has been a development in this story that impacts us all, in one way or another. The ancients believed that when Giant Rock split open it would signal the beginning of a New World, when the Mother would open Her arms to embrace humanity. Yet, as we enter this world of compassion & peace we find that there are some who would rather cling to the old fears, & even try to pollute the Brilliant Light that is now upon us.
A Letter From James Twyman
People from all over the world have read the amazing story about the splitting of Giant Rock here in Joshua Tree, & thousands of people have already come to witness the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy. And yet, most were not prepared for what they found, for as soon as the legend was complete a different energy entered to throw a dark cloud over the miracle. Within two days of the split, the desecration of Giant Rock began. During the night people came to paint profanity across the face of the boulder & burn large objects atop the section that had separated from the original rock.
It is obviously a disturbing sight to come to such a sacred place & witness such insensitivity. The native people of this area held Giant Rock so sacred that only the chief was allowed to come within a mile of it. Now, sitting in the middle of the desert far from the reach of civil authorities, it is easy prey to anyone with the desire to blanket the amazing energy that emits from this sacred place. The question is why, & there is a very good answer. Most of you are aware of the critical importance of this moment in history, what the ancients called the time of the "Great Shift." We are also aware that there are forces in the world that would deny this era of peace, holding to the old world ruled by competition & fear. We will not call these evil forces, but rather energies that are afraid of surrendering to love. And these energies will do anything they can to stop this flow of grace, the flow many of us are feeling now, & hold to the fearful patterns that they have grown accustomed to.
If we are indeed ready for this New World, then it is up to us to shift these energies & welcome the era of peace & compassion. Many of the local residents of the Joshua Tree area are organizing a sacred "Giant Rock Watch" to help protect this ancient symbol of transformation. Each person is assigned a 24-hour watch where they pray & meditate at the boulder, dissuading anyone who would desecrate it during the night. Other locals have volunteered to pay for the rock to be sandblasted to remove the graffiti. This is not a vigilante movement, but a call to prayer & service. If one or more people are present then the likelihood of vandalism is greatly decreased. We need more people to help, & that is why this email is being sent out.

Hundreds of people have already committed to come to Giant Rock & the Integratron (about two miles away) for the event, as well as for the workshop the day before with Doreen Virtue, Gregg Braden & myself on April 22nd. We envision thousands of people showing up to pray at Giant Rock that day, to drum and do ceremony, or to observe a modern day miracle.
